Checking in at Kapama Southern Camp Hotel

Kapama Southern Camp is part of the Kapama Private Game Reserve family. It offers a luxurious safari accommodation, friendly service and a beyond warm hospitality. If you are looking for the ultimate safari experience this is the place to be – whether you come with your family, loved one, or on your honeymoon. Kapama Private Game Reserve forms part of the Greater Kruger National Park and surrounding reserves with the Kruger National Park border only 18 km to the east of Kapama.

Fact about Kapama: The name of the game reserve has its origins in the name of a small railway station across the road from the reserve.

Let me tell you that the experience starts as early as your airport transfer. Upon arrival, your ranger picks you up from the airport with the same vehicle you’ll be using during your game drives. And surprise surprise ; to get to the lodge you get your very own private open game drive through the reserve!

The Rooms at Kapama Southern Camp

Kapama Southern Camp offers 3 different types of rooms. Suites of the size of 45 m2 that have their private patios; luxury villas (95m2) with your own private lap pool and an outdoor shower and family luxury villas (130 m2) with a bigger pool and enough space for the whole family to relax.

We stayed in a luxury villa, which was perfect for us. It is spacious, with its own private pool. A huge bathroom area that leads to an outdoor shower as well. You can watch wildlife while you are showering even in the indoor shower. Of course all rooms come with air conditioning, an electronic safe (that I recommend you use ; for safety tips in South Africa click here); a mini bar that’s complimentary for al guests; and a lavazza coffee machine.

Let’s get to the more serious talk.. THE GAME DRIVES – that is why you are there!

Game Drives at Kapama Private Game Reserve

Kapama is one of the largest privately owned game reserves in South Africa. This uniqueness ensures that only Kapama Game Reserve vehicles are seen during game drives.

Included in the experience are 2 game drives per day – one very early in the morning – 6 to 9 am and 4:30 to 7:30 pm. Each drive lasts about 3 hours; if you are lucky enough during your stay you will be able to see all of the BIG FIVE. With each car there’s a game ranger and a tracker who are both very professional, interesting and entertaining. They know so much about animals it’s really impressive; I loved discussing and getting to know both of them during our coffee break.

Each car takes up to 6 persons, but if the lodge is not full – you get to go on private game drives which is fantastic. Early morning safaris commence with a beverage and snack prior to departure. During the safari a welcome break is offered in the bush (which I personally LOVED.)

Apart from the Africa’s BIG FIVE: Elephant, Lion, Rhino, Buffalo and Leopard, you will find the following species to name a few: impala (loads of them), kudu, zebra, giraffe etc..

The Facilities at Kapama Southern Camp

An ideal place to relax indeed. You can either do that in the lounge, or by the pool deck which has excellent vantage spots to game view.

Breakfast and lunch are served in the open sided dining room, and let me mention that food was delicious! On the first night we got to experience Kapama’s traditional outdoor boma which is a beautiful illuminated by firelight and starry skies dinner with your ranger; in the outdoors.

Our second lunch at Kapama was pretty extraordinary. We were in the room and Kandy (our waitress) came in carrying our lunch that they setup by our private pool, it was fabulous. The attention to detail is really something at Kapama, I loved it!

If you are looking to use the spa while there; you can visit the Kapama Karula Spa. There is no way to describe the sensations of having a treatment in the middle of all the wildlife; it’s pure bliss. You will have to experience it yourself!

Extra activities

Bush Walks is something I wouldn’t miss if I were you. It was quite the experience. It’s an opportunity to explore the bush veld with your armed ranger, you could encounter any animal. It’s fun to track animals, and get to know more about the wild life.

Bush Walks at Kapama

Also located within the Kapama Reserve is the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre where you can see rare wildlife up close. There, cheetah, wild dogs, serval, caracal and various other species are rehabilitated and can be safely viewed.

More over, if you are looking for a different kind of experience; the Kapama Private Game Reserve offers:

  • an even more luxurious experience with their Kapama Karula property – it has 12 suites..
  • a more intimate one with old world luxury tents at their Buffalo Camp – a home in the trees – only 10 luxurious tents.
  • looking for a more social and festive camp? River Lodge is the one for you equipped which is equipped with 64 suites.

To conclude I’d like to say that our experience was out of this world. It is really fascinating seeing all the animals in their natural habitat while being pampered the way we were! Thank you to Kapama and to all the team who made it extraordinary. We will be back!
