Checking in at The Marine in Hermanus – South Africa

In South Africa, one of the best places for a relaxing escapes is The Marine in Hermanus. Situated on the cliff edge, overlooking Walker Bay. The Marine is one of the most spectacular small luxury hotels I have every stayed at. Nothing can top its spectacular views. Part of the Liz Mcgrath Collection, this hotel overlooks the Atlantic ocean and is one of the ultimate Whale watching locations in Hermanus. It offers the ultimate base for ocean adventures.

Located just outside of Cape Town, this is the perfect spot to take in all the incredible natural beauty that the coast has to offer. Famous for its wildlife and whale watching, the city of Hermanus is about a two hour drive out of Cape Town. This road trip will take you through some gorgeous scenery.

The Hotel

Arriving at The Marine in Hermanus feels like coming home. This five-star hotel has 40 rooms and an incredible staff. I believe that just the fact of knowing that you can watch the majestic whales from the comfort of your sea view room makes it enough to be one of the best hotels in the world.

Upon arriving we were offered a welcome drink, and a wet towel while the receptionist was taking care of our check in. Escorted to the room, followed by our luggage. To our big surprise, our room was FANTASTIC!

The Rooms at The Marine Hotel

The 40 rooms, includes 10 luxury doubles with seaview and 10 premier suites. Both categories have the perfect setting for watching pods of dolphins and whales as they swim in the bay below. Of course each room is equipped with luxurious amenities

This hotel offers free Wi-FI, satellite TV. But on top of that, each room has it’s own “Handy”, which is a complimentary smartphone that you can take with you anywhere all through your stay. You can make unlimited local and international calls from it; it offers unlimited internet access; an interactive city guide among other things. I found Handy to be amazing to be honest, such a nice touch.

A complimentary mini bar is available in the rooms, as well as newspaper every morning, fluffy bathrobes and luxury bathroom amenities.

The Facilities at The Marine in Hermanus

Breakfast is offered at The Pavillon an elegant 1920’s style restaurant. It includes a full international breakfast buffet. But also fresh yogurts, fresh juices. A hot option is also available from the breakfast menu that you order upon arrival.

Lunch and dinner are then served at Origins, the hotel’s vibrant restaurant. The menu includes ‘everyday’ favorites prepared with a modern twist by Head Chef Tronette; who’s focus is always local flavors and fresh ingredients.

You may wish to take a refreshing dip in The Marine’s pool, located in the hotel’s courtyard, or in the tidal pool (which can be accessed from the cliff path). For an even more relaxed stay you can check out the Carchele Beauty Spa that offers a range of wellness facilities and signature treatments.

Activities in Hermanus

If you visit during whale season (June to December) you will get to experience something out of this world as Hermanus is considered to be the best whale-watching spot in the WORLD.

Be sure to talk a walk down the Cliff Path which is about 11 kms along the rugges coastline. Set at regular intervals on rocks and cliffs that overlook the sea are a series of wooden benches to sit on and relax.

Thank you for your wonderful hospitality. A special thank you to Sebastian, Melissa and Robert; and of course everyone else!
